“Have you ever wondered at how those seemingly insurmountable challenges and blocks to
improvement during a music lesson are often due to doing too much or trying too hard? We are all
conditioned by our culture to work hard, “try, try, again”, please our parents and teachers… if
something comes easy to us we are told that we are not fulfilling our potential, and we should make
more effort! The price we pay for this well intended but damaging strategy is an overstimulated
neuromuscular system that is constantly responding to the demand to do more instead of
allowing our beautifully designed mechanics to respond to our wishes effectively and efficiently.
This weekend workshop for music teachers and musicians introduces the guiding principles of the
Alexander Technique, a highly regarded method for altering that which interferes with the natural
ergonomics of our human design. We’ll explore how “overdoing” becomes habitually engrained
into one’s musical technique and how musicians can learn to release these unnecessary, automatic
responses to acquire more freedom, spontaneity, access to expression and control in their musical
practice and performance. Positive implications include a more enjoyable musical experience;
richer, more accurate playing; prevention of repetitive motion injuries or chronic tension and pain
from playing; and a decrease or eradication of performance anxiety
Come explore the depth to which habit influences general functioning and the ability to play an
instrument. Take home principles and practical procedures to apply to your own practice as well
as a foundation from which to start encouraging your students to “do” less so they can play with
ease and experience a wider range of possibilities from moment to moment.
The weekend programme includes 6 hours of group class, plus one 45 minute private lesson.
Lessons must be scheduled within the allotted timeframes during the weekend after the group
session on Saturday and just before the group session on Sunday. Group classes will meet:
Saturday, Aug 20, 10:30 -4:30 ~ Sunday, Aug 21- 1:30-4:30; FEE: $120
