SUMMARY:Community Potluck dinner at the Grange!
DESCRIPTION:Getting together to share food is a long-time Grange tradition\, and we’re happy to be able to do it again!\nWe ask that people who have been fully vaccinated join us for this potluck dinner–since it doesn’t work out too well to wear a mask and eat.\nEveryone who’s vaccinated is welcome–it’s all free and open to the public!   We’ll be eating downstairs in the cafeteria area\, which was fully renovated in spring of 2020–so many people haven’t seen it.   We use the vintage dishes\, plates\, bowls\, etc. which the Grange has for events like this; we share the dishwashing after dinner’s done.  There’s always lots of socializing\, sharing of recipes\, discussion of whatever the Grange is doing\, and more.\nWhat to bring?   That’s easy–whatever you like!    The more people come\, the more variety we have.   Here’s an incomplete list of the items that have shown up; we always have plenty of food:\n\n\nBreads\n\n\nCasseroles\n\n\nSoups\n\n\nButter\n\n\nChips ‘n’ Dips (spicy and otherwise)\n\n\nDals and pilafs\n\n\nPasta dishes of all types\n\n\nCookies\n\n\nPies\n\n\nCakes\n\n\nBeverages–soda\, juices\, cider\n\n\nAnd many other things I can’t think of right now.   Bring whatever you’d like to share–and if you haven’t had time to cook\, pick something up on the way to the Grange Hall!  We have a couple of ranges for heating up your food\, and a refrigerator/freezer to cool it down!

DESCRIPTION:Once again\, we’ll hold a tasty potluck dinner\, featuring tasty food and a chance to catch up with other members of the Grange community.\nAs usual\, we never know exactly what will show up\, but we invite everyone to bring what they want to share\, whether it’s a salad\, a loaf of bread\, a main dish or a side dish\, beverages\, desserts or whatever!  It’s a chance to share not only food\, but what else is going on in our lives\, to discuss what we talked about in the Grange meeting\, and just to socialize.  We know everyone is still making up the deficit of social interaction we’ve all experienced in the last 2 years plus. \nWe are asking that only people who are vaccinated come to this event\, just like the Grange meeting that precedes the potluck.  We continue to watch the public health statistics as we make our best judgement about how to balance safety for everyone.  We will be running the 4–Room Air Filter Boxes to continuously filter the air\, providing the equivalent of about 5 air changes per hour.   If the weather is warm\, we may be able to open the windows and use some fans to move fresh air in and out! \nWe have always had more than enough food\, so if you don’t have something ready to bring\, come anyway!

Let’s describe a bit of what goes on\, to take away the mystery. \nOverall structure: \nWe do have a ritual opening and closing process\, adapted by our Community Grange a few years ago to be a little more stream-lined than the ritual outlined in the Grange manual. Our Opening serves as a formal introduction to the “work of the day”–the agenda of reports and discussions which all Community Granges are expected to go through. It always includes singing—of the National Anthem or an alternative\, and of an opening song chosen by our Grange Musician.   Singing together is one of the fun parts!   The opening also includes a performance of the “Grange Salutation” which reminds us of the ideals that Grange Members are to live by—Faith\, Hope\, Charity and Fidelity. \nNext\, we start work on the agenda\, which includes reports on Agriculture and Legislative matters. In our Grange\, which does not currently include any active farmers\, but does include many with an interest in locally-grown food and the localvore movement\, the Agriculture report often includes discussions of farmers’ markets\, schools supplying themselves with local foods\, and ways that people can preserve food for off-season storage\, climate change\, state and national food polices\, and so on. The Legislative report follows the health-care system debates in Vermont\, the “hot issues” on the legislative table\, the actions of the Governor\, and describes the internal workings of the political system. \nWe also have a report on Health Concerns from a working nurse about issues she sees in her practice with Central VT Home Health & Hospice\, and in her reading about health-care. We hear from our Secretary\, who is a former VT State Grange Chair for Home Economics\, about upcoming knitting and sewing contests\, or the annual baking contest. \nWe have a report on the Hall\, which is such a large part of our activities\, as well of our expenses. We talk about problems that need addressing\, and about plans for the future improvement of the Hall. This responsibility is shared with the “Friends of the Capital City Grange Hall”\, which was set up to focus on Hall projects and ways to fund them. \nEvery meeting includes a Treasurer’s report\, which lets us know how the Grange’s bank accounts are doing\, what the prospects are for rental income\, and upcoming expenses. Members have the opportunity to question the Treasurer about details\, and financial decisions being taken\, before the report is accepted by the membership. \n“Suggestions for the Good of the Order” is a regular item of discussion\, as we continue to figure out how to be a Grange in the 21st century.  We are in a Grange Hall which is not a central meeting place for a farm community\, but is rather on the outskirts of a (small) state capital.  We draw hundreds of people from long distances to use our community Hall as a meeting place\, dance hall and performance space.  We work on building our relationship with the Town of Berlin\, for which we serve as a vital meeting-place for Town residents\, families\, and organizations.  The Town itself also holds public hearings and meetings in our Hall. \nDuring the meeting\, members who are present may suggest a motion to commit the Grange to a project\, express an opinion\, send a letter or make a contribution. Members are given the opportunity to discuss all aspects\, before the Grange votes for or against the resolution. Grange meetings are run on Roberts’ Rules of Order\, and are designed as a forum for civil discussion and debate\, in which all can have their say and be equal in decision-making.  We’re happy to support projects when there is someone who cares to follow through on the outcome\, so bring your ideas! \nEach meeting also asks if any Grange members are “sick or in distress”\, and if so\, may direct Flora (one of the 3 Graces) to send a card\, fruit and/or flowers.  Or someone may volunteer to visit and help out. \nAfter completing the agenda\, the meeting closes with a little more ritual.   It always includes a closing song in which all can join\, and the Grange Salutation affirming our commitment to Faith\, Hope\, Charity and Fidelity. \n  \nThen\, we move the furniture around\, put away the sashes\, special stations\, staves for officers\, and re-arrange the chairs for the “Community Potluck” that starts about 6:00–we always have good food and people to join us\, and hope that you will too!

We are scheduling dances on May 7\, May  21\, June 4 and June 18 as well\, with hopes to continue dancing into the summer if the restart goes well. \nContra dancing is joyful and community oriented — and it always involves some risk. We are requiring that all dancers wear masks and be fully vaccinated to help keep our dance safer while COVID is still afoot. We ask for your help and cooperation with these extra safety measures. SUMMARY:Grange Program:  Central Vermont Community Radio--a brand new\, 49-year old radio station
DESCRIPTION:Join us in person\, or via Zoom to hear from WGDR/WGDH station manager Llu Mulvaney-Stanak.\nIn 2021\, CVCR took over management of beloved WGDR/WGDH from Goddard College.  Community-ownership has meant dealing with all the issues of a start-up non-profit\, while maintaining a nearly 50-year old station.   WGDR/WGDH is a legend in the community radio world\, tuning Vermonters into the power of community radio.  Listeners hear locally made programming that provides different perspectives\, free-form music shows to entertain\, and special programming that connects us to one another.  Curated national programming deepens the dialog\, alongside award-winning news programs like “Democracy Now”.\nLlu joined WGDR/WGDH during the community ownership transition\, becoming station manager in the fall of 2021.    During their talk at the Grange\, Lllu will share:   how the station has turned a number of challenges into celebrations\, explain how community radio is more important than ever for our communities\, and provide a larger context on the state of this vital media format here in Vermont.\nLlu started in community radio with their own WGDR show at the age of 13\, co-founded a low-power community radio station in Burlington (99.3 FM\, WBTV-LP)\, and has been a weekly programmer on WRUV\, the UVM college/community station since 2004.   With over 20 years of non-profit and public sector leadership\, Llu brings a great mix of perspective and experience to CVCR as they embark on this important next step for the station. \nCapital City Grange provides programs\, from 5:00 to 6:00 PM\, on the first Saturday even-numbered months from October to June–check this CCG website Calendar for upcoming topics\, in October\, December\, February\, April and June!\nWe will continue to provide Zoom access as long as needed\, so that people can enjoy these educational/entertaining/thought-provoking discussions from home.   Depending on rates of COVID-19 transmission in Vermont\, we will also welcome anyone to attend in person at the Grange Hall.\nWe will ask any people attending who are not vaccinated to wear masks.   Anyone who is vaccinated is also welcome to wear a mask as well!   Weather permitting\, we will use the exhaust fan and open windows to provide fresh-air ventilation in the Hall\, so dress accordingly. \nAll Grange programs are free and open to the public!  Zoom link information:\nTo join the Zoom meeting starting at 5:00 from your computer or smart-phone\, use this link:  https://us02web.zoom.us/j/87507923076?pwd=Wi94N29LY25hVFdIZjZ4Nmxwd2htdz09 \nTo join the meeting\, audio only from your phone\, dial this number:  646 558 8656 \nFor either way of joining:\nMeeting ID: 875 0792 3076\nPassword: 624628
