SUMMARY:LOWER LEVEL--Grange chili contest!
DESCRIPTION:Please bring your chili to the LOWER LEVEL at 4:15 PM!\n \nYou can bring the chili in your own crockpot\, or pour it into one of the ones we will have available\, to keep it warm and tasty for the judges to sample.   Please bring along a copy of the recipe you used to make it (or made  up as you cooked this batch!).  Please put your name inside an envelope so that the judges won’t know who made it\, so we can identify the winners after they make the  difficult decision. \nGrange Sing-along will be happening upstairs\, as we drool with the odors of the chili contest from downstairs.   Here are some details\n\n\nThere are 2 divisions:  with meat\, and without meat.  The latter may be made with meat substitutes.  Please label which division yours should be judged in\, but do not put your name on the label!\n\n\nNo chili made from a pre-packaged or canned chili is eligible.   No pre-packaged chili spice mixes are eligible either–we want truly home-made dishes to be entered.\n\n\nRemember:  there is no prize for the “hottest” chili–we want tasty dishes that everyone who wants to can enjoy\, without suffering!\n\n\nWe hope you will make plenty\, so that potluck attendees will be able to sample the entries!\n\n\nGrange members and non-members are welcome to submit entries.  We are encouraging other potluck folks to make other types of dishes\, since not everyone wants to eat only chili for dinner!\n\n\nCooking contest judging criteria established by the State Grange include:\n\nFlavor:  40 points\nAppearance:  20 points\nTexture:  20 points\nEasy preparation:  20 points\n\n\n\nThe entries that get the highest awards from the judges will receive a certificate suitable for framing\, and possibly a small prize\, as well as bragging rights\, of course.\n\n\nFor more information\, call Marty Roberts at 802-223-5506\, or email isabella1813@yahoo.com.\n\n\nAnyone is welcome to bring your chili to State Grange Family Camp at the Grange Center in Brookfield in July (date TBD) to be judged for State recognition\, as well as entering our local contest!

SUMMARY:MAIN HALL Grange Meeting Sing-Along! at 4:30 (setup starts at 3:30)
DESCRIPTION:After people deliver their chili to the Lower Level (see the separate “Event” on the Calendar)\, it will be time to….\n\nSing-Along at our June Meeting!\n           Our June 6 meeting will be the time to sing along with our excellent Grange Musician and song-leader\, Matt Nunnelly.  Our Grange  has always been enthusiastic singers\, enjoying singing during both the opening and closing of our meetings\, and we’ve enjoyed singing more songs when we have the chance.   We’ll pull our chairs up to the stage to harmonize with Matt on songs in our own Grange’s custom songbooks (assembled by Cecile Sherburn)\, in the Grange Songbook\, and as suggested by people present\, until it’s time to hear the judges’ verdict on the chili contest!\nRemember\, it’s not important to sing perfectly…we want people who love to sing\, however they do it!\nAll Grange meetings and events are free and open to the public; only Grange members can vote on any decisions that we take\, but all are welcome to listen to and take part in discussions. \nJoin us in person\, or via Zoom!\nZoom link for this meeting:https://us02web.zoom.us/j/89458042342?pwd=lTDSQn7VJI7sbAI4aZhv6LBE7K5v2I.1\nWe’ll be happy to have you join us remotely\, and to sing-along with the songs\, but we will ask you to mute your audio since remote singing never aligns properly with the in-person singers!\nAfter the Sing-Along\, at about 5:45\, it will be time to adjourn downstairs\, and see which chilis the judges have chosen!

SUMMARY:Lower Level: Community Potluck!
DESCRIPTION:All are welcome to join us after the First Degree performance\, for a tasty potluck.\nPlease bring whatever you’d like to share–we especially like home-made dishes\, of course\, but if you just have time to pick up some bread and cheese\, or chips ‘n’ dips\, we’ll happily eat those two.  We usually have a mixture of “main dish” items and many kinds of “sides”–vegan dals\, chicken\, tofu dishes\, curries both vegetarian and meat\, salads\, beverages (cider\, iced tea\, juices)\, plus of course desserts! \nNote:  we  have lots of serving spoons\, forks\, ice cream scoops\, tongs\, etc.–we suggest you don’t bring your home items\, so they don’t get mixed up with the ones we have already! \nWe hope you’ll join us for good food and friendly conversation. \nWe use the Grange’s vintage plates\, bowls and silverware\, plus serving utensils of all sorts.  We discourage the use of disposables.   Volunteers step up to the sinks to pre-rinse\, wash\, rinse & dry after the meal.   It can be fun and social!

SUMMARY:Grange meeting--in person or via Zoom! Setup 3:30\, meeting starts at 4:30
DESCRIPTION:Grange meetings are open to everyone!\nWe are happy to have the public see how a Grange meeting operates–our process is open to all.\nWe’ll be happy to  have you\, any way you want to attend! \nOn odd-numbered months\, we usually hold a full\, official Grange meeting\, complete with officers wearing sashes\, sitting in their assigned locations. \nMost of this meeting will be dedicated to rehearsing the performance of the First Degree of Grange membership\, which we’ll be performing in full on the following day\, May 3rd.  We will be setting up the Grange paraphernalia–officers will be wearing their sashes\, and we’ll be following the Grange meeting ritual for the agenda.\nWe welcome anyone who wants to join us\, and wants to help the Grange to function smoothly\, improve our outreach\, and broaden the community services we provide.  If you have questions\, comments or ideas\, please join us!   You can always contact Grange President Tim Swartz at:  grangepresident@capitalcitygrange.org in between meetings. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nZoom link:\nJoin Zoom Meeting\nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/j/81355591669?pwd=lz0LyafusoZ0HiP4aen9xEYB2xzqvV.1\nMeeting ID: 813 5559 1669\nPasscode: 913449\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGrange meetings: What happens there\, anyway?\n\n\nWhat happens at a Grange meeting? \nA Grange meeting might seem intimidating\, before you check one out yourself\, because it seems a little mysterious and full of “Grange Ritual”. Let’s describe a bit of what goes on\, to take away the mystery. \nOverall structure: \nWe do have a ritual opening and closing process\, adapted by our Community Grange a few years ago to be a little more stream-lined than the ritual outlined in the Grange manual. Our Opening serves as a formal introduction to the “work of the day”–the agenda of reports and discussions which all Community Granges are expected to go through. It always includes singing—of the National Anthem or an alternative\, and of an opening song chosen by our Grange Musician.   Singing together is one of the fun parts!   The opening also includes a performance of the “Grange Salutation” which reminds us of the ideals that Grange Members are to live by—Faith\, Hope\, Charity and Fidelity. \nNext\, we start work on the agenda\, which includes reports on Agriculture and Legislative matters. In our Grange\, which does not currently include any active farmers\, but does include many with an interest in locally-grown food and the localvore movement\, the Agriculture report often includes discussions of farmers’ markets\, schools supplying themselves with local foods\, and ways that people can preserve food for off-season storage\, climate change\, state and national food polices\, and so on. The Legislative report follows the health-care system debates in Vermont\, the “hot issues” on the legislative table\, the actions of the Governor\, and describes the internal workings of the political system. \nWe also have a report on Health Concerns from a working nurse about issues she sees in her practice with Central VT Home Health & Hospice\, and in her reading about health-care. We hear from our Secretary\, who is a former VT State Grange Chair for Home Economics\, about upcoming knitting and sewing contests\, or the annual baking contest. \nWe have a report on the Hall\, which is such a large part of our activities\, as well of our expenses. We talk about problems that need addressing\, and about plans for the future improvement of the Hall. This responsibility is shared with the “Friends of the Capital City Grange Hall”\, which was set up to focus on Hall projects and ways to fund them. \nEvery meeting includes a Treasurer’s report\, which lets us know how the Grange’s bank accounts are doing\, what the prospects are for rental income\, and upcoming expenses. Members have the opportunity to question the Treasurer about details\, and financial decisions being taken\, before the report is accepted by the membership. \n“Suggestions for the Good of the Order” is a regular item of discussion\, as we continue to figure out how to be a Grange in the 21st century.  We are in a Grange Hall which is not a central meeting place for a farm community\, but is rather on the outskirts of a (small) state capital.  We draw hundreds of people from long distances to use our community Hall as a meeting place\, dance hall and performance space.  We work on building our relationship with the Town of Berlin\, for which we serve as a vital meeting-place for Town residents\, families\, and organizations.  The Town itself also holds public hearings and meetings in our Hall. \nDuring the meeting\, members who are present may suggest a motion to commit the Grange to a project\, express an opinion\, send a letter or make a contribution. Members are given the opportunity to discuss all aspects\, before the Grange votes for or against the resolution. Grange meetings are run on Roberts’ Rules of Order\, and are designed as a forum for civil discussion and debate\, in which all can have their say and be equal in decision-making.  We’re happy to support projects when there is someone who cares to follow through on the outcome\, so bring your ideas! \nEach meeting also asks if any Grange members are “sick or in distress”\, and if so\, may direct Flora (one of the 3 Graces) to send a card\, fruit and/or flowers.  Or someone may volunteer to visit and help out. \nAfter completing the agenda\, the meeting closes with a little more ritual.   It always includes a closing song in which all can join\, and the Grange Salutation affirming our commitment to Faith\, Hope\, Charity and Fidelity. \n \nThen\, we move the furniture around\, put away the sashes\, special stations\, staves for officers\, and re-arrange the chairs for the “Community Potluck” that starts about 6:00–we always have good food and people to join us\, and hope that you will too!

SUMMARY:Grange meeting--in person or via Zoom! Setup 3:30\, meeting starts at 4:30
DESCRIPTION:In person or Zoom meetings!  Be part of our meeting\, safely\nWe’ll be happy to  have you\, any way you want to attend! \nWe’ll be running the ceiling-mounted air purifier\, and our Energy Recovery Ventilator which brings in warmed fresh air. Both of these have been installed recently\, to improve our Indoor Air Quality (IAQ).\nOn odd-numbered months\, we usually hold a full\, official Grange meeting\, complete with officers wearing sashes\, sitting in their assigned locations\, and following the modified ritual script we’ve developed. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nZoom link:  Join Zoom Meeting\nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/j/86215093517?pwd=jT8AOSNTDEWwfy1GruHabSI1ajJDwl.1\nMeeting ID: 862 1509 3517\nPasscode: 586754 \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAt our March 7 meeting\, we’ll be discussing:\n\nPlans for the May 3rd performance of the First Degree of Grange membership.\nScheduling the annual Grange cooking contest–this year it’s chili\, in meat and meatless divisions.   Perhaps at the June 6th meeting?\nReporting on the Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) improvements:  ERV bringing in fresh air\, ceiling-mounted air purifier in the Main Hall\, both of which are now functioning.\nWe’ll have our legally required “Corporation Meeting”–come see if we can do it in under 5 minutes!\nWe hope to have 3 types of padded folding chairs available for all to try\, so we can decide which type to order.\nGrant Orenstein and Indivisible Calais will be asking for Grange sponsorship for another dance\, to happen in August or September.  This one will benefit Vermont Bridge to Care\, an organization working to make it easier for Vermonters to access mental health care\, and to train Vermont’s mental health workforce.  The director will be joining us to talk about the organization at about 5:00 PM.\n\nAnd as always\, there will be a potluck at 6:00!\n\nGrange meetings: What happens there\, anyway?\n\n\nWhat happens at a Grange meeting?

SUMMARY:MAIN HALL: Grange meeting\, starts at 4:30\, setup at 3:30
DESCRIPTION:In person or Zoom meetings!  Be part of our meeting\, safely\nWe’ll be happy to  have you\, any way you want to attend! \nWe’ll be running the Room Air Filter Boxes that filter and recirculate the air in the Hall\, to reduce the risk of transmitting diseases.\nOn odd-numbered months\, we usually hold a full\, official Grange meeting\, complete with officers wearing sashes\, sitting in their assigned locations.  Grange meetings happen (usually) on the 1st Saturday of the month\, like this one. \nThis month\, we will be holding a meeting using our modified Grange opening and closing ceremonies\, and following the sequence of reports and discussions.   We will be visited by Brenda Rousselle\, a member of the State Grange Executive Committee.   We welcome anyone who wants to join us\, and wants to help the Grange to function smoothly\, improve our outreach\, and broaden the community services we provide.  If you have questions\, comments or ideas\, please join us!   You can always contact Grange President Tim Swartz at:  grangepresident@capitalcitygrange.org in between meetings. \nThis meeting on Nov. 1 will include a report on the decisions of the State Grange meeting on Oct. 24 & 25\, an update on ERV project progress\, the beginnings of a discussion of purchasing new\, padded chairs\, thanks to the gift in memory of  Charles Martin\, given by North Branch Grange\, and more. \nZoom link:\nJoin Zoom Meeting\nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/j/87312771130?pwd=AyB9WgtJjS7YY2xprnI4qcIZJcgaoG.1 \nMeeting ID: 873 1277 1130\nPasscode: 242551 \n  \n\nGrange meetings: What happens there\, anyway?\n\n\nWhat happens at a Grange meeting?
