SUMMARY:Grange Hall FOYER WALL CONSTRUCTION
DESCRIPTION:Wheelchair lift:  We expect the installation of the platform/wheelchair lift to be mostly complete by around February 17th.\nFor the last few weeks of February\, Stan will be working on replacement of the original walls and double-doors separating the Old Entrance Foyer from the Main Hall\, with a “fire-rated” wall and fire-rated double doors\, as required by the Fire Marshal.\nNo new rentals will be taken during the construction period\, between 8 AM and 5 PM Monday to Friday\, for safety and comfort reasons.  Stan will be leaving the worksite in safe condition at the end of each workday\, so that evening and weekend events should be able to happen as usual.\nThis project is 50% funded\, as part of the wheelchair lift “Project Uplift”\, by a grant from the VT Arts Council’s “Facilities Improvement” grant program.   The balance of the funding comes from donations from Grange Hall users and Grange supporters!   We thank every one who has contributed money and time to make this project happen!   Fundraising\, planning and project management are provide by the Friends of the Capital City Grange Hall\, a 501(c)(3) non-profit.  To learn more about the FCCGH\, and to donate to them\, please click the “Support the Hall” page on this website!\nContributions to the FCCGH are tax deductible to the full extent allowed by the law.\nThe new wall will also include a storage closet for the tables we’ve been storing in the foyer\, plus traffic cones and other items\, as the Fire Marshal will not allow storage of any loose items at all in the foyer (no trash or recycling containers\, no snow shovels\, no brooms).  Below is a plan section of the new wall arrangement.  Please contact Grange President Tim Swartz for any questions:  swartztim15@gmail.com.\nWe will not be scheduling any new rentals during the construction period–Monday to Friday\, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM through March 3rd.\nWe will have a celebration on Sunday\, March 5th to officially “Open” the lift\, with fresh-baked cookies\, ribbon cutting\, ceremonial “first rides”\, info tables from Grange Hall users and other local organizations\, and a Community Dance\, with live music by the VT Fiddle Orchestra\, and dances for all ages called by Luke Donforth!   Please join us\, 2:00 to 5:00 PM on March 5!

Let’s describe a bit of what goes on\, to take away the mystery. \nOverall structure: \nWe do have a ritual opening and closing process\, adapted by our Community Grange a few years ago to be a little more stream-lined than the ritual outlined in the Grange manual. Our Opening serves as a formal introduction to the “work of the day”–the agenda of reports and discussions which all Community Granges are expected to go through. It always includes singing—of the National Anthem or an alternative\, and of an opening song chosen by our Grange Musician.   Singing together is one of the fun parts!   The opening also includes a performance of the “Grange Salutation” which reminds us of the ideals that Grange Members are to live by—Faith\, Hope\, Charity and Fidelity. \nNext\, we start work on the agenda\, which includes reports on Agriculture and Legislative matters. In our Grange\, which does not currently include any active farmers\, but does include many with an interest in locally-grown food and the localvore movement\, the Agriculture report often includes discussions of farmers’ markets\, schools supplying themselves with local foods\, and ways that people can preserve food for off-season storage\, climate change\, state and national food polices\, and so on. The Legislative report follows the health-care system debates in Vermont\, the “hot issues” on the legislative table\, the actions of the Governor\, and describes the internal workings of the political system. \nWe also have a report on Health Concerns from a working nurse about issues she sees in her practice with Central VT Home Health & Hospice\, and in her reading about health-care. We hear from our Secretary\, who is a former VT State Grange Chair for Home Economics\, about upcoming knitting and sewing contests\, or the annual baking contest. \nWe have a report on the Hall\, which is such a large part of our activities\, as well of our expenses. We talk about problems that need addressing\, and about plans for the future improvement of the Hall. This responsibility is shared with the “Friends of the Capital City Grange Hall”\, which was set up to focus on Hall projects and ways to fund them. \nEvery meeting includes a Treasurer’s report\, which lets us know how the Grange’s bank accounts are doing\, what the prospects are for rental income\, and upcoming expenses. Members have the opportunity to question the Treasurer about details\, and financial decisions being taken\, before the report is accepted by the membership. \n“Suggestions for the Good of the Order” is a regular item of discussion\, as we continue to figure out how to be a Grange in the 21st century.  We are in a Grange Hall which is not a central meeting place for a farm community\, but is rather on the outskirts of a (small) state capital.  We draw hundreds of people from long distances to use our community Hall as a meeting place\, dance hall and performance space.  We work on building our relationship with the Town of Berlin\, for which we serve as a vital meeting-place for Town residents\, families\, and organizations.  The Town itself also holds public hearings and meetings in our Hall. \nDuring the meeting\, members who are present may suggest a motion to commit the Grange to a project\, express an opinion\, send a letter or make a contribution. Members are given the opportunity to discuss all aspects\, before the Grange votes for or against the resolution. Grange meetings are run on Roberts’ Rules of Order\, and are designed as a forum for civil discussion and debate\, in which all can have their say and be equal in decision-making.  We’re happy to support projects when there is someone who cares to follow through on the outcome\, so bring your ideas! \nEach meeting also asks if any Grange members are “sick or in distress”\, and if so\, may direct Flora (one of the 3 Graces) to send a card\, fruit and/or flowers.  Or someone may volunteer to visit and help out. \nAfter completing the agenda\, the meeting closes with a little more ritual.   It always includes a closing song in which all can join\, and the Grange Salutation affirming our commitment to Faith\, Hope\, Charity and Fidelity. \n  \nThen\, we move the furniture around\, put away the sashes\, special stations\, staves for officers\, and re-arrange the chairs for the “Community Potluck” that starts about 6:00–we always have good food and people to join us\, and hope that you will too!

DESCRIPTION:On the first Saturday of every month (with a few exceptions for holidays)\, we host a Community Potluck dinner\, which is open to all\, and free!\nPlease join us in the Lower Level of the Grange Hall\, which (starting March 4\, 2023) is accessible via the wheelchair lift\, so that everyone can attend\, including those with mobility limitations!\nWe encourage everyone to bring whatever they wish to eat and share–we welcome:\n\nAppetizers\nSoups\nSalads\nChips\nSalsa & dips\nBreads\nCheeses\nMain dishes–casseroles\, curries\, roast meats\, roasted vegetables\, you name it\, we’ll eat it!\nSide dishes–veggies\, rice pilafs\, potatoes\, you name it\, we’ll eat it!\nDesserts–cookies\, cakes\, pies\, ice cream\nBeverages–cider\, juices\, carbonated beverages\, etc. (all non-alcoholic\, please!)\nWe have great-tasting (and well-tested) well water.\n\nWe’ll use the Grange’s great selection of vintage china and melamine plates and dinnerware\, and a couple of volunteers will help to wash up after the meal.\nWe hope you’ll join us to meet some new folks\, re-meet some old friends\, talk over what’s happening in the Grange and the rest of the world!

DESCRIPTION:Musicians are Rebecca Weiss\, Andy Davis\, George Wilson\, Becky Hollingsworth \nThe Montpelier Contra Dance is excited to announce that we have restarted our dance series. \nContra dancing is joyful and community oriented — and it always involves some risk. We are requiring that all dancers wear masks to help keep our dance safer while COVID is still afoot. We ask for your help and cooperation with these extra safety measures. Full COVID details at: capitalcitygrange.org/dancing/contradancing \nOur dance uses gender-neutral role terms\, and we strive to be a safe place for everyone to dance.  Beginners\, singles\, and all ages are welcome; all dances are taught. \nWhen: 1st\, 3rd and 5th Saturdays\, 8–11 p.m: newcomers lesson offered around 7:40 pm \nWhere: at the Capital City Grange in Berlin (located on Northfield Street/Route 12 just south of the I-89 overpass)\, \nCost: Admission is $12 for adults\, $5 for kids or low-income\, $20 for dance supporters–choose the right price for your budget! \nWhat to bring: We suggest light\, comfortable clothing — expect to wear short sleeves or a tank top\, even in winter. Please bring clean\, soft-soled shoes to preserve our floor. Bring a water bottle to refill at our water fountain/bottle filler. SUMMARY:CELEBRATE! Info Fair + Free Family Dance to celebration of our wheelchair lift!
DESCRIPTION:We’re celebrating making the entire Grange Hall accessible!\nStarting in January\, our contractors worked to build a “hoistway”\, add electrical circuits and then to install a new platform/wheelchair lift\, which will bring Grange Hall users from the accessible main floor to the stage and lower levels!\nThe doors open at 2:00 PM\, with live music by the Montpelier Senior Center Jazz Ensemble.   At about 2:15\, we’ll have a ceremonial ribbon-cutting and remarks by the Lt. Governor and others \, with refreshments:  cookies\, coffee and tea.\nWe’ll also have an “Information Fair” with table displays and representatives from many community service organizations.  These will include: \n\nBerlin Emergency Management (Fire & Fast Squad)\nBerlin Historical Society\nCapital City Grange\nCapstone Community Action\nCentral Vermont Community Harvest\nCub Scout Pack #777:  bringing a craft project!\nEfficiency Vermont: bringing free “Energy Savings Kits” to give away–LEDs and more!\nJust Food Hub:  selling fair-trade food products to benefit non-profit organizations\, including the Grange–and giving out some free samples!\nKellogg-Hubbard Library\nKids Trade & Play\nMadDog Chapter\, Trout Unlimited\nMontpelier Church of Christ\nUVM Extension Service & 4H\nVT AFL-CIO\nVT Center for Independent Living\n\nFrom 3:00 to 4:30:  a community dance\, open to all ages and experience levels!\nWell-known dance caller Luke Donforth will teach and lead dances for kids\, parents\, grandparents\, aunts and uncles–and everyone who wants to dance!   Live music will be provided by the Vermont Fiddle Orchestra (who rehearse in our Hall every week). \nThis will be a fun way to mark a milestone in making the Grange Hall accessible and even more welcoming to all people\, and we look forward to having you join us! \nFor more information\, contact Tim Swartz\, Grange President:  swartztim15@gmail.com \nThis wheelchair/platform lift project is partially funded by a grant from the VT Arts Council’s Cultural Facilities Grant Program\, which is made possible by funding from the State of Vermont.  Additional funds were provided by generous donations from Grange members\, Grange Hall users including the Montpelier Contra Dance community\, and individuals and organizations that support our mission of providing a Community Hall for Berlin and Central Vermont.
