Grange Notes by Tim Swartz for July 4, 2016
Join local dancers for a special free dance party, with a potluck dinner beforehand, on Saturday 7/9!
A local couple, dedicated dancers at the Grange, Cindy & Mack Gardner-Morse are sponsoring the 2nd Saturday dance this month. To celebrate their 30th wedding anniversary, they are covering the costs for the dance, so we’re all invited to dance for free! Music by Riptide, contra-dances called by Adina Gordon, and a waltz workshop after the break. And before the dance, join Mack, Cindy, their family, friends and fellow dancers for a potluck dinner, starting at 5:30!
Cindy and Mack have been dancing at the Grange Hall for a number of years, and we are honored that they are having their celebration here, and supporting one of the Grange-based dance series in this generous way. If you don’t know them by name, you’ll recognize them in matching shirts at dances! There’s a family photo on the Grange website “Event”: https://capitalcitygrange.org/
Cindy says: bring any dishes you want! And please, “presence, not presents”.
The dance will start at 8:00, and will feature a caller and band with local roots. Caller Adina Gordon, based in Burlington and calling all over the country is no stranger to Grange dancers, and has been a good friend to the Grange as well. Riptide features Glen Loper on mandolin, Alden Robinson on fiddle, Owen Marshall on guitar, and the legendary Mark “Pokey” Hellenberg on percussion. The band is based in Maine but travels througout the U.S. and beyond. Owen grew up dancing at the Grange Hall, and the band has played for CDU dances a number of times.

This year, they’re collecting socks (and shoes). I’m not dealing with shoes!!! But, I issued a challenge to all the Vermont Granges to contribute 400 pairs of (new) socks. Any kind of sock, and any size of sock. Store bought socks or hand made socks. Red, green, blue, brown, multi colored, toe socks – anything!!! I want VT to “Sock it to Washington”!!! I’ll have a display at our State Session and then they’ll go to Washington DC. Spread the news, I want socks…………….
We’ve gotten a head-start on our collection, with a donation of a large bag from Cabot Hosiery Mill in Northfield, but we need to add to it!
Look for the laundry basket with the sign in the Grange Hall, and fill it up with socks!
Watch the Grange Calendar for more events; I’ll publicize as many as I can in these Notes.
We are also looking for Berlin non-profits, in particular, which we can work with. Do you know a group that could use our facilities, or with which we could co-fundraise? Let us know!
